! The South Jeff Backpack Program was started in the fall of 2010 by Cindy
Overton, Food Services Manager for the South Jefferson School District.
! Cindy overheard a conversation between two middle school boys talking about
what they did the previous weekend. One of the boys mentioned that the last meal he
had was lunch at school on Friday. This conversation set the wheels in motion for Cindy
to do something. Thus, the South Jeff Backpack program was born
! As of January 1st. 2013, 43.9% of the school children in the South Jefferson
School District were eligible to receive free or reduced price school meals. This number
is based on the number of students receiving free or reduced price meals in the district,
as compared to the total enrollment of the district. The South Jefferson School District
student enrollment was 2,087 as of January 1, 2013.
! When the program began in 2010, 48 backpacks were sent home to children
enrolled in The Backpack Program. As of January 1, 2013, 70 backpacks are being
sent home every weekend.
! The South Jeff Backpack Program is currently feeding 150 children every
weekend. The Backpack Program has a pantry of food items that is maintained by Kara
Hayes. Backpacks filled with food are sent to the enrolled children’s homes every Friday
on school buses. A typical backpack will contain peanut butter, jelly, english muffins,
instant oatmeal, instant macaroni & cheese, canned fruit, etc... this selection changes
! In addition to food, once a month a Kinney’s Drug orange bag is sent home to the
families with soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorants, laundry detergent, and
dishwashing liquid. Every 6 months a toothbrush for each family member is sent home.
The home essentials pack helps to ensure that the family is receiving household
hygiene items.
! The South Jeff Backpack Program does not receive any monies from the South
Jefferson School Budget. The Backpack Program relies strictly on donations of food
and money from our community residents and our local businesses. The Backpack
Program has no administrative costs and is staffed by volunteers. All food and
household essentials are delivered directly to the enrolled families and their children.
