JCC to host Evening of Music and Conversation featuring Black Violin and Martin Luther King III

Student Activities Center at Jefferson Community College (JCC) will host an evening conversation featuring Martin Luther King III, son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on Saturday, February 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater on campus. Prior to King’s presentation, audience members will be treated to a mini-performance by Black Violin, two classically trained violinists who blend the sounds of jazz, hip-hop, funk and classical music. The topic of King’s presentation is overcoming life’s obstacles and his commitment to carry on his father’s legacy. King is the former president and chief executive officer of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Atlanta, Georgia. To foster personal and educational development of today’s youth, King initiated the King Summer Intern Program and A Call to Manhood, a program designed to unite young African American males with positive adult role models. Additionally, King developed a charity basketball game, Hoops for Health, to create awareness of the effects of substance abuse on infants. In 2008, the anniversary of his father’s “I Have a Dream” speech, King III spoke at the Democratic National Convention on behalf of then presidential candidate, Barack Obama. According to his official website (http://www.mlkiii.org/Home.php), King III received one of India’s most prestigious honors in 2010, the Ramakrishna Bajaj Memorial Global Award for outstanding contributions to the promotion of human rights.

There is no cost to attend, however tickets are required for admittance. Allotted on a first-come first-serve basis, tickets will be available on January 22 for JCC students who present their SUNY ID card and on February 4 for the public.
