The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), formed in 1987, supports research of prominent scientists and young investigators whose objective is to enhance understanding and prevention of suicide. Scientific research oftentimes sheds light on why a person commits suicide, treatment, intervention and prevention, and the impact of suicide on family members, communities and societies. Over the past eleven years, AFSP has awarded more than $20 million dollars in grants.
