The story of the Trojan Horse is a familiar tale. The Greeks hid in a large wooden horse. The horse was then left outside the gates of Troy. The Trojans believed it was left as a peace offering, so they wheeled the horse inside their walls. However, when the Trojans slept that night, the Greeks snuck out of the wooden horse and opened the gates of Troy. The Greek army was victorious in battle and ended the decade long Trojan War.

However, most people do not know the tale following that bloodshed night. The play opens at the break of dawn as Troy lies in ruins. The city has been looted and the Trojan women are held captive. Through out the play, many of the women express grief for the loss of all they know. In particular, Hekabe, former Trojan royalty, lets it be known that Troy has been her home for her entire life, only to see her home burned down, the death of her husband, children, and grandchildren. Despite Hekabe’s loss and her fate as an enslaved concubine she states, “death is nothing; life offers hope.” What hope can be found after such a tragedy?
