Event Description

Loosely based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee have penned a script that examines the effects of McCarthyism on the accused, the lawyers and those who witness their testimony. Inherit the Wind premiered on Broadway in 1955 and has remained within the realm of finely crafted American plays ever since. In the play, the compelling argument of Creationism vs Evolution is battled by Matthew Harrison Brady, a lawyer and famed orator and politician, who has come to Hillsboro to defend Creationism. His opponent is Henry Drummond, the finest criminal attorney of the age, who argues for intellectual freedom: “the right to think.” Caught in the middle is Bertram Cates who stands accused of breaking the law by teaching Darwinism in defiance of the Butler Act which prohibited the teaching of any theory “that denies the Story of the Divine Creation of Man as taught in the Holy Bible.” The personal relationships that erode or strengthen as a result of the trial, the battle of legal minds, the fight for what is most dear to the hearts of men are plumbed and exposed. And there to interject his cynical, albeit humorous, remarks is newspaper editorialist E.K. Hornbeck. These three characters are to represent William Jennings Bryan (Matthew Harrison Brady), Clarence Darrow (Henry Drummond) and H.L. Mencken (E.K. Hornbeck), titans of the era. Directed by Sharee Lemos this show runs for 10 productions October 11-26, 2013. Thursdays and Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays 6:30 Dinner 8PM Show, and Sundays @ 2 pm. $34.95 Dinner and Show, $20 Show Only, $15 Show Only Thursdays and Sundays.
