On the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site’s annual War of 1812 Living History Weekend, a granite monument will be dedicated to the American forces who served during the May 29, 1813 “Second Battle of Sackets Harbor.”Return to event list.
Sunday August 3rd at noon, those attending the dedication will gather at the monument’s location on Ontario Street west of the historic site, to hear remarks by several guest speakers, highlighting the battle and its significance during the war years.
The New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs funded the 200th anniversary monument to the historic site’s not-for-profit support group The Sackets Harbor Battlefield Alliance, Inc. The text on the monument reads: “To the memory of the gallant United States Regulars and New York State Troops, Army, Navy, Marines, and Militia; who stood firm against the British Crown Forces, May 29, 1813.”
A shade tent with limited seating is available for the brief ceremony. Park along Ontario Street, or in the Site’s lot off Hill Street to follow the stone dust trail to the monument.
The dedication concludes the Historic Site’s annual War of 1812 Weekend featuring living history demonstrations all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
