Event Description

48th Annual Gem & Mineral Show - The St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club is proud to announce their 50th Anniversary at the 48th Annual Gem & Mineral Show August 22 – 24, 2014 at the beautiful Municipal Park and Community Center in Madrid, NY. There is no charge for admission – all are welcome to attend. Dozens of collectors/vendors from several Northeastern states and the Southeastern Canadian provinces will be offering part of their collections for sale to the public on Saturday and Sunday. This event offers a little something for everyone: Handcrafted jewelry vendors and jewelry making suppliers, museum quality crystals, fossils, and mineral specimens for the nature lover and art collector, handcrafted gift items, free “Kids Mineral Kits”, rock-collecting trips, gem tree and wire wrapping classes, educational geological presentations, a great Gem & Mineral Auction, raffles, and fun & fellowship. The show kicks off Friday Night after dark on August 22, 2014 with Club Member Dino Zack, a Certified Geologist from Buffalo NY and student mentor at SUNY Buffalo, leading the Friday evening Kid’s Fluorescent Mineral Hunt. Children will be lent a portable black light to search the park for samples of fluorescent minerals provided by the Club – finders, keepers! Dino will give a 30 minute general geology presentation prior to beginning the fluorescent hunt which will also cover the requirements for the Scouts to earn their Geology pins and loops, and close with a discussion on luminescence. We encourage Scouts to get there at 8:30 pm for the presentation. Something new this year is a free raffle for kids at the Friday evening fluorescent mineral hunt to win a new fluorescent lamp donated by Dino. Now you can really see your rocks light up at night! Also for kids again this year is the Kids Mineral Kits table manned by Dino and his family. For those of you interested, Dino will be giving general geology presentations on Saturday at 10:00am, 12:00pm, and 2:00pm. Scouts unable to attend Friday’s mineral hunt can still earn their pins/loops by attending one of his presentations. Club Member Dave Millis, from Pennsylvania, well known for his gem trees and wire-wrapped jewelry, will be offering wire wrapping lessons/demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday. Lessons are free – there will be a nominal charge for materials. The Club is sponsoring the “Geode Cracker.” Geodes are hollow rocks formed millions of years ago by natural processes. Some contain quartz crystals, others contain amethyst. The customer may purchase a geode, then be the first person in the history of the earth to see inside your geode as it is split in half right in front of your eyes by our skilled Geode Cracking Team! On Saturday evening August 23, 2014 there will be an auction at 5:00 pm of donated mineral specimens and other items of interest to rockhounds. It features long-standing Club Member and auctioneer extraordinaire, the man of many hats, Schuyler Alverson. This auction is open to the public and we encourage all to attend. Throughout each day of the show, tickets will be sold for a chance to win a large Brazilian amethyst cathedral. Tickets cost $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 and can be purchased inside the blue pavilion. The winning ticket will be drawn by one of the young bystanders on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Who loves Rock Pickin!! Guided field trips to Power’s Farm in Pierrepont, NY, a famous location for black tourmaline and quartz crystals will leave on Saturday morning, and a trip on Sunday to Bush Farm, a collecting location for brown tourmaline and tremolite. Fees for collecting at each of these locations is $5.00 per day and the trips are open to rockhounds of all ages. The Madrid Municipal Park and Community Center is located in the village of Madrid, near the intersection of State Route 310 and State Route 345 beside the Grasse River. Local restaurants are within walking distance and a food concession truck will be open during show hours, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, and snow cones.
