Charles A. Furnace, 81, of Norfolk


Norfolk - Charles A. Furnace, 81, of Brouse Road, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family and Hospice.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Raymond's Church with Rev. Andrew J. Amyot presiding.

Friends and family may be received on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Louisville, in the spring.

Charles was born on January 24, 1932 in Massena Center, the son of Wilfred and Victoria (LeGroux) Furnace. He proudly served his country by entering the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne and was honorably discharged in 1953. That same year he married June Eldridge on September 26 at St. Patrick's Church with Rev. Dennis E. Lynch presiding.

Upon his discharge he farmed on the family dairy farm on the Gladding Road; he later worked construction for the St. Lawrence Seaway. Charles worked at Reynolds Metals for 31 years and retired as a crane operator in 1991.

He was a member of St. Raymond's Church, American Legion Post # 925 of Norfolk.

In earlier years both he and his wife enjoyed camping throughout the north country and meeting new friends. Charles enjoyed NASCAR racing. In his earlier years he raced stock cars all around the north country.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, June; three daughters and two sons, Sheila Nichols of Brushton, NY, Donna (John) Allen of Tampa, FL., Brenda Lee and (Terry) Carr, of Chase Mills, NY, Wilfred (Karen) Furnace of Augusta, GA and Lynn (Lisa) Furnace of Norfolk, NY; five grandchildren, two step-grandsons, and two step-granddaughters.

Charles is also survived by his brothers Arthur of Bedford, IN, and Phillip of Brasher; his sisters Elaine McDonald of Massena and Phyllis Collins of Florida and many nieces and nephews.

Charles was predeceased by his brothers Lee and Donald Furnace and a sister, Shirley Tucker.
