Donald W. VanTassel, 82, of Theresa


Theresa - Donald W. VanTassel, 82, of Bridge Street died Wednesday, October 30, 2013 unexpectedly at his sugar bush on Honeyhill Road while deer hunting.

Born May 9, 1931 in Alexandria Bay, NY, he was son of the late William and Ethel Joyner VanTassel and graduated from Theresa High School.

In 1950 he entered the US Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1953.

He married Sally E. Bartlett on August 7, 1959 at the Theresa United Methodist Church.

Mr. VanTassel worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway doing dredging and driving a yuke; St. Regis Paper Co.; the lead mines in Balmat and retired from the New York Air Brake after more than 30 years.

He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) both in Theresa, the Theresa Planning Board, a trustee of the former Oakwood Cemetery Association and founding member of the High Falls Hunting Club.

Mr. VanTassel was a NASCAR fan and Matt Kenseth was his favorite driver. He enjoyed cutting wood and fishing and especially hunting and making syrup at his sugarbush with family and friends.

Survivors including his wife, Sally, are a son and his wife, Ronald G. and Jennifer, of Theresa; two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda and Kevin Dwyer and Kim and Randy Delles, all of Theresa; six grandchildren, Chelsea VanTassel, Chase VanTassel, Sarah McClusky and her husband Matthew,  Ryan Dwyer and his wife Kristin, Stefanie Langley and her husband, Jeffery, and Kaitlin Delles; four great grandchildren, Lily and Violet Langley, Brady McClusky and Emma Dwyer; two sisters, Doris Steele, of Watertown and Emily LaFazia, of Philadelphia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Betty VanTassel, died before him.

The funeral will be 11 am, Saturday, November 2, 2013 at theTheresa Presbyterian Church with Rev. Nancy Smith, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Saturday at the church.

There will be a reception at the Theresa Fire Hall. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.
