Leon Johnson, 83, of MassenaMassena - Leon Johnson, 83, of 26 Monroe Parkway passed away Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 22, 2013) at the St. Regis Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Leon was born on September 26, 1929 in Potsdam, the son of Myrtle Johnson. He graduated from Brasher-Stockholm School in 1946. Leon proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. He married Lucia Catanzarite on May 2, 1953 at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Bernard F. Kellogg officiating. He was employed at Reynolds Metals as a machinist where he retired after working over 30 years. Leon was a lifetime member of the Korean War Veterans Association, AMVETS Post #4, VFW Post #1141, American Legion Post #79 and the Massena Senior Citizens. He was a talented musician and sang with the Canton Goldennaires barbershop chorus and in the Knights of Columbus Minstrel Shows. Leon enjoyed listening to country and gospel music, using the carpentry skills he learned from his grandfather and tending to his home and his lawn. Leon is survived by his wife Lucia, and three daughters, Charlene and Robert Dumas, Stephanie and David Sedlock, and Marilyn and Roger Gollinger all of Massena, his step-sister Arleen Clary, his sister-in-law Phyllis Meacham. Leon is also survived by three step-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Enos and Blanche Johnson, the grandparents who raised him, his mother and step-father Myrtle and Harold Kirkey, his brother Lelland Meacham and his step-sister Sally LaRose A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00am on Jan 24, 2013 at St. Mary's Church, Massena, with Rev. Scott D. Fobare officiating. Interment will take place in the spring with full military honors at Calvary Cemetery, Massena. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, which will support the local 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's.
