Agnes B. Smithers, 86 of GouverneurAgnes B. Smithers, 86, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 25th at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Bob King and Rev. Howard Maxson, pastor of Fowler Baptist Church officiating and burial in Fairview Cemetery, Edwards. Calling hours are Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Agnes was born in Hermon on August 5, 1925, the daughter of Glenn and Louise Van Buren Bullock. She graduated from Edwards High School in 1943, attended State Teachers College at Potsdam.She continued her education by correspondence courses and graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA in May 1987 with a Bachelor in Theology degree. Agnes married Harry A. Smithers on June 16, 1945 in Edwards. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm on Black Lake for 12 years, moved throughout the Northeast while working for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on various construction projects before opening Smithers Tire Service, Gouverneur in 1962 which they owned and operated until retirement. They had also owned and operated Star Lake Auto Sales. Agnes and Harry enjoyed traveling the country in their mobile home and spent many winters in Florida. Agnes also enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers, reading, knitting, sewing, playing cards and games, but most of all, the couple enjoyed dancing. Agnes was a member of the Fowler Baptist Church and had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grange, the Red Hat Society, and the Star Promenaders Square Dancers Club. Agnes is survived by her husband of 67 years Harry, three sons Harry A. Smithers II and his wife Julie of Gouverneur, Hubert Smithers and his wife Virginia of Portland, OR, Roger Smithers and his wife Diana of Gouverneur, two daughters Elaine Stalder and her husband Thomas of Forrestport, Lorrie Gordon and her husband Vern of Middleburgh, 14 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers Clifford and Sally Bullock of Edwards, Charles and Sue Bullock of Edwards, Herb and Scottie Bullock of Canton, five sisters Leona and Paul Baker of Watertown, Lois McAllester of Canton, Mary and Earl Knight of South Colton, Joyce and Bill Cooper of Binghamton, Anna and Dick McCormick of Gouverneur, two sister-in-laws Sue Bullock of Canton, Eleanor Blackburn of Buffalo, many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, an infant sister Margaret Bullock, a brother Harold Bullock, a brother and sister-in-law James and Ruth Bullock, and a brother-in-law Allen "Oscie" McAllester. Memorial donations may be made to the Fowler Baptist Church or E.J. Noble Hospital. |
