New Bremen - Arthur Lewis Mathys, 93, of Van Amber Road, Castorland, NY, died at his home Thursday afternoon, October 3, 2013 while under the care of his family.
He was born August 15, 1920 to the late John and Barbara Martin Mathys on the family homestead in the Town of New Bremen, Lewis County and married Mary Ella Lehman September 8, 1951. Art and Mary lived on the Mathys family homestead.
Art attended the one room school house on Van Amber Road. Starting at age 17, he drove dump truck to Pennsylvania, returning with loads of coal for local delivery.
At the age of 20 he started driving tractor trailer until 1942, when he took over the family farm after his father’s death. He also drove milk truck for area farmers at that time as well as hauling cheese and logs.
In 1954 he gave up farming full time and went back to driving tractor trailer while keeping only a small number of cows on the farm. He drove for Miller Motor Lines, Buckley Motor Express, and WT Byrnes, retiring from the Teamsters Local 317 in 1983.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mary; a son, Stanley D. (Alice), New Bremen, NY; two daughters, Judy (John) Hodkinson, Croghan, NY and Linda (Harold) Deveines, New Bremen, NY; seven grandchildren, Chad (Carrie) Hodkinson, Oneida, NY, Michael Mathys and Leslie Diebert, Mills, WY, Jona (Daniel) Almasy, Carmel, IN, Bobbie (CSM Harold) Plattenburg, Sierra Vista, AZ, Jared Deveines, New Bremen, NY, Dillen Deveines, Manchester, NH, Jenna Deveines, Providence, RI; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Almasy, Riley and Emily Hodkinson, and Kassidy Plattenburg; two sisters-in-law, Susanna Widrick, Castorland, NY and Frances Lehman, Lowville, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents he is predeceased by his older brother, Harry; two sisters-in-law, Rayta Mathys and Verna Roggie; and three brothers-in-law, Clarence Lehman, Clayton Widrick, and Howard Roggie.
Art was a member of the First Mennonite Church of New Bremen and the Teamsters Local 317, Syracuse. He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, the family pets and especially watching the grandchildren’s sporting events.
Funeral arrangements are with the Adirondack Funeral Home, Croghan, NY.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 7, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM with the funeral on Tuesday, October 8, at 10:30 AM at The First Mennonite Church of New Bremen, State Route 812, New Bremen, NY, with Pastor Bruce Chartrand officiating.
Interment will be at the church cemetery.
