Beatrice E. Deer Jacobs, 100 of AkwesasneMrs. Beatrice E. Deer Jacobs, 100, formerly of 126 St. Regis Road, peacefully passed away Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2013 at Iakhihsohtha Lodge, with her loving family by her side. She had been residing at Iakhihsohtha Lodge since 2002. Beatrice was born June 23, 1912 in Hogansburg, the daughter of the late John and Sarah Barnhart Deer. She attended Mohawk schools. On June 26, 1929, she married Louis Daniel Jacobs at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Bourget, officiating. Mr. Jacobs predeceased her on September 1, 1993. Beatrice was a homemaker who dedicated her life to raising her seven children. When she was younger, she once worked as a nanny in Saranac Lake, in the cafeteria at St. Regis Mohawk School, and later with the Warner Brothers Corset Factory in Massena. She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and taught catechism for many years. As an active community member, she was one of the founding members of the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens, represented the St. Regis Mohawk Office of the Aging in Washington, DC, awarded the “Woman of the Year” award with the Business and Professional Women, and was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Cemetery Association for many years. Beatrice was well known for her public speaking, community affairs at school, and her skills as a seamstress, having made the Altar and Rosary Banner and the funeral pall used at the church. She enjoyed traveling, singing, and loved listening to music. Beatrice is survived by her seven children, Delores Thompson of Hogansburg; Louis Jr. and Bettie Jacobs of Hogansburg; Darlene and Peter Sunday of Snye; Dale Bintz of Massena; David Jacobs and his companion, Anne-Marie Fitzrandolph of Hogansburg; Daniel and Debra Jacobs of Hogansburg; and Denis Jacobs of Hogansburg; 32 grandchildren; countless great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 3 grandchildren, William B. Jacobs at age 3 on August 5, 1975; Stiles Daniel Jacobs on November 26, 1992; and Stewart D. Jacobs on April 15, 2009; two great grandsons, Sky Light on September 8, 2006 and Jacob D. Light on March 15, 2012; two great-great grandsons, Niklas Adams-Thompson on January 14, 2010 and Thunder Sky Light on September 29, 2012. She was also predeceased by her brother, Louis at age 2; a half sister, Leah Deer; a stepsister, Mary Phillips; and a stepbrother, Abraham Phillips. Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens or the Iakhihsohtha Lodge Activities Fund.
