Beverly Joyce Grimes, 89, of Alexandria BayAlexandria Bay, NY -- Beverly Joyce Grimes, 89, gently left this earth Sunday, March 17th at River Hospital in Alexandria Bay with her daughter, Penny at her side. Beverly was born July 1, 1923 in the Town of Dickinson at the Bailey family farm in Franklin County, NY. She was the eldest daughter of Wilbur and Dorothy Bailey. As one of five children, she and her siblings grew up living at Dexter Lake, where she hunted, fished and played baseball with the boys. Beverly graduated from St. Regis Falls High School as Valedictorian in 1940 and then entered nurses training at St. Lawrence State Hospital in Ogdensburg, NY. She was the Valedictorian of her nursing class when she completed training in 1944. Before graduation, she enlisted in the United States Navy and was called to active duty in April 1945. Beverly’s service to her country at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Brooklyn was brief, but she was always a proud patriot. Mom was known for displaying the American Flag in her garden, in her flower pots, and on her mailbox. On May 25, 1945, Beverly married Hunter Fuller Grimes II and they were together for 53 years until his death in 1998. They raised five children in Alexandria Bay, while living on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, where fishing, ice skating, swimming and boating was enjoyed by all. Beverly worked more than forty years at River Hospital. She began at E.J. Noble as an OB nurse and also worked in the E.R. Later, after her retirement, she continued serving the hospital as a volunteer. Beverly was known for her loving dedication to her family and enjoyed baking pies and oatmeal cookies for all. She enjoyed gardening, baking, berry picking, and reading. Mom’s zest for living life her way was readily evident as she drove too fast, worked tirelessly at the Church functions, and raced around her yard on the lawn tractor well into her 80’s. Beverly is survived by her five children: Rex (Debbie) and Hunter (Martha) of Redwood; Geoffrey of Malone; Kim (Paul) Susice of Massena; and Penny (Richard) of Rensselaerville. She was the beloved grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of 19. As Aunt Beverly, she held a special place in the Hearts of our Bailey cousins. She was predeceased by her step-daughter Diane Sutton, grandson James Sutton, and her husband Hunter. There will be a celebration of her life at 11:00 am on Friday, March 22nd, at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria Bay. In lieu of flowers, Beverly’s wish is to support the organizations that benefit the community she loved, River Hospital, the United Methodist Church in Alexandria Bay, and the Redwood Volunteer Ambulance Squad. The Grimes family gratefully acknowledges the kind and compassionate care our Mother received at River Hospital, especially from Dr. Troy Johnson and all the nursing staff in the medical surgical unit. We also deeply appreciate the loving support from Pastor Freddie and her church family, especially during the last year. |
