Carlton N. Smith, Sr, 85, formerly of Helena

HELENA – Mr. Carlton N. Smith, Sr, 85, formerly of Route 37C, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 22, 2012, at Maplewood Campus, Canton, where he had been residing since 2010.

Carlton was born August 21, 1926 in Fort Covington, the son of the late Edward and Celestine Payne Smith.  He attended schools in Fort Covington.  On May 14, 1949, he married Bernice LaBrake at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Msgr. George Funcke, officiating.  Bernice predeceased him on November 7, 2004.

Carlton worked for the Town of Brasher in the Public Works Department and was also involved in  the construction of the Seaway.  Carlton was also a farmer, who raised horses, especially Trotters and Pacers.  He enjoyed horse racing, hunting, and gardening.   He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hogansburg and a member of the Teamsters’ Union.

Carlton is survived by his seven children, Carol Ashley of Massena; Patrick and Marty Smith of Canfield, OH; Carlton Jr. and Alvina Smith of Canada; Denise and Duane Leggue of Stockholm; Kathy and Angus LaMora of Massena; Marlene Smith and David Breggs of Brasher Falls; and Michael and Betty Smith of Norwood; 16 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Marion Kotz of Rensselaer Falls, his brother, Harold “Joe” Smith of Westville; and many nieces and nephews.

Carlton was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Bates on August 24, 1975; a son, Bernard C. Smith on March 7, 1977; two brothers, Edward Smith Jr. and Thomas Howe; and two sisters, Shirley Martin and Marguerite Y. “Judy” Garrow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 12:00 NOON at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hogansburg.  A calling hour will begin at 10:00 AM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.  Burial will follow the services in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Covington.
