Charles R. Fanning, 73, passed away on July 27th, 2013 and will be missed more than anyone can imagine. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.  He very rarely looked back.

Born on November 14th, 1939 in Copenhagen, the son of Roscoe and Faye Fanning.  He graduated from Copenhagen Central School with the Class of 1957, where he participated on the football, basketball and baseball teams, among other activities.  He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  He then worked briefly for Agway, then on the family farm.  He then operated the farm full time from 1970 until his retirement in 1995.

He participated on the Copenhagen town basketball team for a number of years, enjoyed serving with the Copenhagen Volunteer Fire Department, as Past Secretary and member of the “Cubs” Drill Team.  He looked forward to the field day races every year.  He forged many friendships and loved the camaraderie.  He loved sports, especially baseball and was able to attend many major league and a few minor league games.  He was an avid angler, woodworker and bowler.  He took pride in having bowled a perfect game.  He enjoyed the outdoors and was proud to produce maple syrup from his property for a number of years, as well as a large and productive vegetable garden.

Starting in January, 2006 he served as a Lewis County Legislator with passion and determination.  He died shortly after marching in the Copenhagen Fireman’s Field Day parade for the purpose of reelection for a 5th term.

Charlie was an excellent role model to his children and grandchildren.  He taught, not by his words, but by example, the importance of working hard, meeting ones responsibilities, taking care of family, self-reliance and thinking for yourself.  With a lightheartedness and silliness, he enjoyed his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn and his four children; Andrew Fanning, Canton, NY, Alan Fanning, Lunenburg, MA, Amy Elliott, State College, PA and Abe Fanning, New Boston, NH.  His 11 grandchildren include Gabriel, Kaitlin, Emily, Alacin, Adam, Holly, Christine, Mollykate, Kathryn, Kimberly and Erin.  He is also survived by his two sisters, Kay Wetzel and Sharon Weiler and one brother, Delvin Fanning.

A funeral service for Mr. Fanning will be held on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013 at the United Church of Copenhagen, with the Rev. Samuel P. Lundy, Anglican Priest, officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Copenhagen.  Visitation will be held at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 10229 Washington St, Copenhagen on Tuesday, July 30th from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.  www.lundyfuneralhome.com
