GOUVERNEUR – Charles R. Harder, age 86, of Gouverneur, passed away on April 9, 2012 at the United Helpers Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton where he had resided since July 2011.

Charles was born on November 22, 1925 in Elmira, NY to the late Arthur A. and Elizabeth (McCann) Harder. He attended school at North Side High in Corning, NY then entered into the United States Navy on March 28, 1944 serving in WWII until his honorable discharge on September 13, 1946.

He married Helen Greene on June 21, 1947 in Corning, NY with Rev. Elmer J. Stuart officiating. Mrs. Harder passed away on August 18, 2009.  Charles worked on the family farm for several years and then worked as a bus driver for Corning Bus Lines. Mr. Harder then worked for two years at Corning Glass until going to work for NYS Electric and Gas as a Line Foreman working there for 34 years until his retirement on January 1, 1985.

After his retirement he and his wife moved to Englewood, Fl where they lived for 22 years and moved to Gouverneur in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, Past Master of Corning Lodge #1038 Masons, Past Royal Patron of the Amaranth Court 60 in Corning. He enjoyed traveling, sight seeing and photography.

Surviving is a son, George G. Harder and his spouse, Todd Menard – Harder of Clayton; a daughter, Dr. Mary E. Harder of Punta Gorda, FL; 2 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

There will be no formal services for Charles. Arrangements are being handled by French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Donations given in his memory may be made to the United Helpers Maplewood Campus, 205 State Street, Canton NY 13617.
