Massena – After a five year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), Mr. David F. Martin, 76, of 2046 State Highway 131, passed away Monday evening, December 9, 2013 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been in a patient since December 5.

David was born September 14, 1937 in Lake Placid, the son of the late Robert P. and Nellie Vallance Martin and attended Massena schools. On May 26, 1955, he entered the US Army, serving with the Headquarters Battery 548th AAA Missile Battalion at Loring Air Force Base in Maine. He was honorably discharged on May 23, 1958.

After returning home from the military, he married Beatrice J. Tupper on May 16, 1959 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massena.

David worked at Reynold’s Metals as a tapper for 35 years retiring in 1997. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 450A and, at one time, very active in Little League sports.  David enjoyed camping, was an avid Yankees fan, and helped his children remodel their homes.  Perhaps his greatest enjoyment was the cherished times he spent with his family.

David is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice; his children, Perry and Shelly Martin of Mexico, NY, Michael and Mari Martin of Woodford, VA, Larry Martin of Massena and JoAnn Andress of Massena; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Leo, Patrick, Raymond, Robert, and Darius Martin; and his sister, Margaret Jenkins.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104.
