Donald Roger Jackman, 94, of Potsdam


A funeral service for 94-year old Mr. Donald Roger Jackman of Potsdam, NY will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Kenneth Hammel officiating.

Burial will follow at the Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam.

Friends may call at the Seymour Funeral Home in Sunday afternoon and evening from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Potsdam Humane Society, 17 Madrid Ave., Potsdam, NY 13676.

Mr. Jackman died on July 11, 2014 at his daughter’s home in the Town of Parishville, while in the loving care of his family.

Survivors include his companion Sally Planty of Parishville; a son David R. (and his wife Judy) Jackman of Massena, NY; four daughters Sherri (Marshall) Richards of Parishville, NY, Lynn Jackman, and her companion Brian Hutton, also of Parishville, Dona Jean (and her husband Jason) Endries of Saranac Lake, NY, April Joy (and her husband Max) Cline of Norwood, NY; a step-daughter Gaile M. Wilson of Parishville, a step-son L. “Skip” Gee of Glens Falls, NY, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Don was predeceased by a daughter, Ann M. Jackman, two brothers, Myron “High” Jackman and Raymond Jackman, and two sisters, Helena Bowman, and Marjorie Rochfort.

Don was born February 6, 1920, in Champlain, NY the youngest child of Harry W. and Helen S. (Briggs) Jackman. He was a 1941 graduate of Potsdam High School. Don graduated from Clarkson College in 1943 with a degree in Machinist Technology.

His employment began with Smith & Wesson Firearms in Syracuse, where he remained for the duration of WWII. He then took a job with ALCOA Massena, NY foundry as a machinist, followed by a time with Kendall Lamar Machine Shop in Potsdam, NY.

During the construction of the Seaway project Don was employed by the Perini & Sons Contractors as a machinist. He returned to ALCOA Massena operations and remained until he opened his own business, Jackman’s Machine and Welding Shop, in Potsdam in 1957, where he remained for many years.

A marriage to Frances Cuglar ended in divorce. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a founding member of the Palmer Sportsman’s Club in Parishville in 1958. Don was a former member of Racket River #213 Free & Accepted Masons in Potsdam.
