Doris Cox Lerch, 90, native of Parishville

Doris Cox Lerch died peacefully on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital after a brief illness.

In keeping with her wishes there will be no service or calling hours. Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam.

Doris was born on July 2, 1923 in Parishville, NY the only child of Clarence and Hazel (Lucas) Crystal. She graduated with a regent’s diploma from Parishville High School in 1939 at the early age of 15.

A marriage to Donald Cox resulted in divorce and she later married Melvin Lerch who passed away before her in 2010.

Doris retired from Canton-Potsdam Hospital in 1985 and then worked as a Hospital Guild Volunteer where she was known and remembered by many as the “TV Lady.”

Doris was very involved with the senior citizens in the area serving as President and Secretary of the St. Lawrence County Senior Citizen Council, President of the Potsdam Sandstone Senior Citizens, vice-president of the Parishville Hilltoppers Senior Citizens and as a MAP Counselor for St. Lawrence County.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Connie and Daniel Maguire of Parishville; two sons, Robert and Karen Cox of Parishville, and Jerry Cox and Martha from Pigeon Forge, TN. Doris is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kelly and Danny Maguire, Lauren and Stephanie Cox, Laurie Pete, Cheryl Levante and Michelle Lucas, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Doris was known for playing piano at area dances, and calling at square dances, a skill she learned from her father at a very young age. She loved to dance which she enjoyed so much with her husband Melvin. She loved to crochet and knit and many benefited from this craft as she loved to give folks her created gifts.

Doris loved to read, work on jigsaw puzzles and cook. She also loved to play cards and spending time with her family was her greatest pleasure, and she will be missed by all.

If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice and Palliative care, 6805 U. S. Highway 11, Potsdam, NY 13676, or to the Parishville Volunteer Rescue Squad, or Parishville Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 547, Parishville, NY 13672.
