Douglas L. Murray, 83, of Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN– Douglas L. Murray, 83, 31151 NYS Route 12, died Wednesday, August 1st, 2012 at his farm. 

Born August 2nd 1928 to Merrill and Eva Thornhill Murray, he graduated in 1945 from Hermon Central School. He then graduated from Cornell University in 1949 with a bachelor degree in Animal Science.

He married Helen Hewitt from Gouverneur on August 31, 1953.

After graduation from Cornell in 1949, Doug and his parents moved to the farm's present location in 1951. At that time the farm consisted of a 45 stanchion barn, 236 acres of which 86 were tillable. In 1966 Doug and his wife Helen were sole proprietors of the farm and built a 112 stall insulated free stall barn and a double six herringbone parlor.

In 1979, Doug and Helen formed a partnership with their Son Lynn and daughter in law Peggy, and the farm continued to expand and until the time of his death, Doug was an active part of the farm business. Today the farm milks 675 cows and crops over 2000 acres.

Doug has a passion for his family, his faith, agriculture, and education.  He served the community in many capacities. He was a past 4-H Leader, Jefferson Community College Trustee for 12 years, chairman for three, Board of Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church, Member of the First Jefferson County Dairy Princess Committee, Jefferson-Lewis American Dairy Association Committee, Board of Directors  of Tug Hill Tomorrow and the Jefferson County Agricultural Development Corp.

At the time of his death he served on the board for the Development Authority of the North Country, trustee for Watertown Savings Bank, Jefferson County Work Force Development, member and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church and on the Centennial Committee for Cornell Cooperative Extension Jefferson County.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Helen, three sons and three daughter-in-laws, David and Debbie, Wichita, Kansas; Lynn and Peggy, Copenhagen, Roger and Connie, Groton, NY. Eight grandchildren: Matthew and his wife Lisa, Redwood City California; Carly and Kurt Harryman, West Des Moines, IA; Mark and Sara Murray Watertown; Jenna and Ryan Waite, Watertown; Bryan Denver, CO; Gregory, Groton, NY; Drew and Adam, Wichita Kansas and 6 great grandchildren. 

Also a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald and Connie Hewitt, Gouverneur.

His parents and a brother, Victor, died before him.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 6th at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, Washington St., Watertown, with the Rev. Fred G. Garry, Senior Pastor, officiating.  Burial will be following at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 5th, at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 10229 Washington St., Copenhagen, from 1 - 3 & 5 -8 PM. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Douglas and Helen Murray Agricultural Scholarship, Northern NNY Community Foundation, or the Alzheimer’s Association both located at: 120 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601
