Dr. Roger Sullivan, 61, of Massena
Massena--Dr. Roger Sullivan, an internist and resident of Massena New York since 1989, died at home August 25, 2013, following a three year battle with cancer. He was 61.
Roger Sullivan was born on October 28, 1951. He attended grade school at Wildwood Elementary School, in Piedmont, California, across the bay from San Francisco. Science was Roger's favorite subject.
As a teenager Roger lived in Bangkok, Thailand and in the Washington, D.C. Area. He graduated from North High School in Fargo, North Dakota in 1970.
He studied Anthropology for two years at York University, in Toronto, Canada. He served for one year as a VISTA Volunteer on an Indian Reservation in North Dakota, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology.
Roger attended two years of medical school at the University of Grand Forks, and then transferred to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis Missouri, where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine in 1983. He completed his residency at Waterbury Hospital, a Yale affiliate, in 1987, and was board-certified in Internal Medicine the same year.
Roger worked as a clinic physician in Camden, New York, for two years, and opened his own practice in Massena in May of 1989. He practiced medicine in Massena from 1989-2011.
Roger was known by his colleagues and his patients as a brilliant diagnostician, who served the people of the north country regardless of their ability to pay. He chose work he loved, and he excelled at it.
He was also a gourmet cook, and he loved to host parties and dance. Reading, however, may have been his deepest pleasure. The walls of the unique and beautiful home he helped design in 1998 are lined with volumes of his favorite authors. He was a kind and gentle man. He raised orphan raccoons and always gave money to panhandlers as he said, “It might be what they need to get through the day.”
Roger is survived by his “Darling Rose," Dr. Rosemarie Heisse of Chase Mills, New York, by his twin brother Gordon Sullivan, of Moscow, Russia, his sister Valerie, of Martinez, California, his sister Carla Sullivan Reilly, of Green River, Wyoming, his niece Katherine Anne Bluhm, also of Martinez, California, and his nephew David Christopher Bluhm, currently enrolled at the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.
He was predeceased by his father, Robert Leonard Sullivan, his mother, Janice Claire Tibbitts Sullivan, and his younger brother, David Bret Sullivan.
A celebration of Roger's life will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at the Village Inn Restaurant, in Massena, New York.
