Emerson T. Forbes, 89, of Canton


Canton – Emerson T. Forbes, 89, of Lincoln Street, (his lifetime residence) died Saturday, November 10, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Home in Ogdensburg.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton, with Canton Fire Dept. standing honor guard.  The fire department will also have a service at 7:45 PM on Wednesday.  A Fireman’s Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton with Pastor Donna Doig and Monsignor Harry Snow co-officiating.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Canton.

A Luncheon will follow at the Canton Fire Department, 77 Riverside Drive.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret “Peg” Forbes of Maplewood Campus, Canton; his daughter, Lynette M. “Lyn” Forbes, Canton; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Kimberlee Forbes, Watertown; his grandson, Craig Emerson Forbes, Watertown; three nephews, Bob, Bill and Hugh Rood.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Esther Rood and Marian Papaw.

Emerson was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Canton, NY.  The son of Lee and May (Emerson) Forbes, he graduated of Canton Central School and St. Lawrence University.  He was a Veteran of the US Army serving during WWII. 

On July 3, 1947, he married Margaret “Peg” Louise Van Buren at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton. 

Emerson was employed as a Probation Officer in Canton for St. Lawrence County and a well respected St. Lawrence County Fire Instructor. When he was younger he worked at Missert Distributing.

He was a past board member of Fairview Cemetery, Potsdam Elk’s Club and Canton VFW #1231.  He was also a former Chief of Canton Fire & Rescue, Chief of St. Lawrence County as well as New York State Fire Chief.

On Oct. 1, 2011 Emerson was honored for 70 yrs of active service to Canton Fire & Rescue, where he joined in Dec. 4, 1941.  He served as Chief from 1965-1969 and was Treasurer of the Rural Fund from 1970-1983.  He was also St. Lawrence County Deputy Coordinator for District 1, Car 4, from 1961-2001.  Emerson was also St. Lawrence County’s first State Fire Instructor.  In honor of His years of service, the members of Canton Fire decided to name the drive around the station, Emerson Forbes Drive.  

He enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Chapman Point in Morristown.
