Ernest D. Lowe, 77, of Clayton


Clayton -  Mr. Ernest D. Lowe, age 77, died Tuesday evening at his residence where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. As per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. There will be a celebration of life at a time and place to be announced.

Ernie was born June 21, 1935, in Alexandria Bay, the son of George and Ola Wood Lowe. He graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and Attended Jefferson Community College.

On August 24, 1959, he married the former Phyllis Larkin at the Clayton Baptist Church with Reverend Williams officiating.

Ernie served in the United States Air Force from 1954 until he was honorably discharged in 1962. He retired in November of 1985 from the Air Force Reserves after 39 ½ years. He worked as a Security Policeman and retired from the Fort Drum Fire Department, at the rank of Captain, in 1991.

Ernie was a life member of the Clayton American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821, where he was a past commander and service officer. He also was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Clayton. Ernie was a retired Air Force Master Sergeant.

He was a life member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire department, a life member of the NNY Volunteer Firemen Association, a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, a member of the Watertown Elks 496 and the NRA.

He was a former member of the Clayton Masonic Lodge 296 and Chaumont 172 and he was a life member of the Goodwill Parade Committee.

Ernie was very proud that he gave over 13 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.

He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, going to the casino and especially his grandkids and Legion family.

Surviving besides his wife Phyllis, are one son Raymond (Tracy) of Clayton; three grandchildren; one brother Kenneth (Patsy); four sisters, Wanda Menetret, Audrey Rock, Bernice (Tiny) Houghton and Frances (Fanny) Martin; nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by brothers James, Delos, Edward, Walter, Bernard (Jack) and Milford (Hank) and sisters Harriet Zuller and Marguerite Burgess.

Donations may be made in his name to T.I.E.R.S. of Clayton, the Clayton Fire Department or the Hospice of Jefferson County.
