Frederick J. Schneider, 74, of Castorland

CASTORLAND – Frederick J. Schneider, 74, of Van Amber Road, died Wednesday evening, July 11, 2012 at Samaritan Medical Center. 

Family and friends are invited to call from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Dora Schneider, sister and retired Methodist minister, officiating.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Riverside Cemetery Annex, Beaver Falls.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Faye; four sons and their families, Jon of Kingsport, TN; Randall, his wife, Linda, and their son Timothy of Rutherfordton, NC; Erich, his wife Margaret, and their two sons, Ethan and Luke, and daughter, Erica, of Travelers Rest, SC; Kurt, his wife, Katy, and their daughter, Ellery of Greenville, SC; a sister, Rev. Dr. Dora J. Schneider of Watertown; many in-laws and cousins.

Mr. Schneider was born in Lowville on October 5, 1937, a son of the late Timothy J. and Jennie Honer Schneider. He graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1955, and worked for Climax Manufacturing, Castorland. 

On August 11, 1962, he married Faye Juby at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Castorland, with Rev. Flavian Colligan, OFM officiating. 

Mr. Schneider was a civil deputy for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department for several years.  Beginning in 1968, he attended Jefferson Community College for two years and Brockport State College for one year, before graduating from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1972. 

Mr. Schneider worked for area businesses before opening his own business in Croghan, F.J. Schneider Outdoor Power Equipment.  He operated the business in the Croghan location for 15 years, before moving the shop to his home in the 1990s. 

Mr. Schneider was elected to the New Bremen Town Board for two years, before becoming Town Supervisor, serving 22 years until his retirement in 2011.

Mr. Schneider was a founding member of Lewis County Search and Rescue, and was a founder of the Croghan Lumberjack Festival.  He was the author of the “Along the Black River” column in the Lowville Journal and Republican.  He was the author of Town of New Bremen; co-authored (with Ken Proulx) Proud to Serve (History of the Croghan Fire Department); and authored the Glenfield and Western Railroad.  Mr. Schneider was the Town of New Bremen Historian, and served on several local agencies’ board of directors.

He enjoyed reading and writing about local history, spending time with his family, and boating.
