Potsdam - Gary N. Bartow of Potsdam passed away in the Fletcher Allen Hospital of Burlington, VT on Thursday, May 2, 2013 after an 18 year battle with COPD.
Born September 10, 1928 in Buffalo, NY, the son of Horace and Gertrude Bartow, he attended public schools and Hutchison Technical High School in Buffalo. He graduated from SUNY Cortland with highest honors in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in physical education.
Following graduation he entered the US Navy, serving in the Korean War. After discharge in 1954 he began a 39 year teaching career at SUNY Potsdam in the School of Education, teaching physical education in the Campus School. During this tenure he served the College as Interim Director of the Campus School and for a short time Director of the College’s Camp at Star Lake. During this time he received a master’s degree in guidance from St. Lawrence University and continued doctoral studies at New York University.
Along with teaching he was an active member of the College’s UUP serving as treasurer for many years and serving on many College committees.
Gary was active in the Potsdam community assisting with youth athletic programs. He was a Life member of the Potsdam Elks Lodge, served as an officer of the Lodge, was a Past Elk of the Year and co-chaired the Youth Activities Committee for many years. He was a guiding adult in the organization of the Potsdam Figure Skating Club.
His church was an important part of his life as he was an ordained Elder and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam. He served as co-chair of the fund raising committee for the building of the Church Community Center, now a hub of church, community and educational activities.
In 1958 he married Dawn Morey in the Big Moose Chapel in the Adirondacks. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dawn, and their children, Danielle Bartow Grant (Fay) and Michael Bartow all of Potsdam. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Dustin, Derek and Dillynn Grant, also of Potsdam.
Gary enjoyed spending summers at their cottage on Raquette Lake, often times pushing the ice on the lake so he and Dawn could get to their cottage. Gardening, crossword puzzles and cheering for the Buffalo Bills and Sabres and the Clarkson Men’s Hockey team were favorite pastimes.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 19th, 2013 from 4 to 6 PM in the Potsdam Presbyterian Church Community Center located on the corner of Elm Street.
