George E. Leavery, 77, of Clayton


George E. Leavery, 77, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at his home on Webb Street in Clayton.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Wednesday, February 12, from 4 - 7 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church on Thursday, February 13, at 11 AM with Rev. Arthur LaBaff officiating and burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

George was born in Clayton on June 10, 1936, the son of Ray M. S. and Anna Hlavka Leavery, and he graduated from Clayton Central School in 1953.

He married Dianne C. Natali on July 13, 1957 at St. Mary's Church, with Rev. George E. Racette officiating.

He actively served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1958, and he retired from the Naval Reserves in 1984 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer.

After his active service, he began his career with NYS Department of Transportation, retiring April 19, 1995 as a supervisor.

George was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of its Parish Council, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 350. He was an exempt member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Dept. and had raced with the Clayton Calumets. He coached and refereed youth sports, was an active local and national sports fan, and was a member of the Clayton Youth Commission. His passion was his family and sports.

Besides his wife, Dianne, he is survived by his son, Victor R. "Bud" Leavery and his two daughters, Robin C. Leavery and Cynthia L. Matthews and husband, Christopher D., all of Clayton; four grandchildren, Georgia Weller, Jesse Weller and wife, Emily, Morgan Matthews, and Mari Matthews; brother, Walter J. Leavery, Syracuse; brother-in-law James Hungerford, Clayton and FL; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

George was predeceased by his two brothers, Francis A. and William G. Leavery, and his three sisters Ruth Tucker, June Knox, and Helen Hungerford.
