Gino M. Zando, 82, of DeferietDeferiet - Gino M. Zando, 82, of 11 Baron Ave, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at the Carthage Area Hospital where he has been a patient for 4 weeks. Gino was born in Deferiet on July 10, 1930, the son of the late Marco and Justina Olivier Zando. He was a 1947 graduate of Augustinian Academy, Carthage and attended JCC for continuing education. He married the former Joann L. Reed on August 7, 1965 at St. James Church in Carthage. For 47 years he worked at St. Regis/Champion in many management positions, retiring as Customer Service Manager. He served as President of the Management Club, United Way Chair and many more affiliated organizations. He was a licensed real estate broker. He was a Jefferson County Legislator for 16 years in District 6, serving on numerous committees and was a former Trustee and Mayor of the Village of Deferiet. Gino was a member and lector of St. Rita’s Church, BPOE Lodge # 1762 and Knights of Columbus Council # 291, both of Carthage, a graduate of Toastmasters International, Past President and member of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce receiving the “Friend of the Community and Chamber Award in 2011, former member of the Carthage Area Hospital Board of Directors, Carthage Library, Community Action Planning Council, Deferiet Fire Dept., member of AUSA and Jeff. Co. SPCA. Gino was known for his great sense of humor, enjoyed his grandchildren, love to read, attended daily mass, was an avid New York Yankees fan. He leaves his wife Joann L. of Deferiet, two sons and their wives, Craig and Lynda Zando of Verona, NJ and Christopher and Jennifer Zando of Allendale, NJ, 2 grandsons, Marco and Lucas and a granddaughter, Ava and several nieces and nephews. 3 brothers, Ado, Louis and Mario Zando are predeceased. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Rita's Church, Deferiet with Rev. Garvin Demarais officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2-5pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Rita's Church, Deferiet Vol. Fire Dept. or the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation.
