Gordon L. Aznoe , 90, of Redwood


Gordon L. Aznoe , 90, of Barnes Settlement Road, Redwood, died March 25 at River Hospital, where he was admitted Feb. 18 following a short illness.

He was born on April 11, 1923 in Algonquin, Ontario, the son of Gordon R. and Rose Warnock Aznoe. His family moved to New York State when he was nine months old. He was educated in country schools and raised on farms throughout the area. He graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1942.

He married Marion Taylor on June 30, 1946 at the United Methodist Parsonage, Alexandria Bay. Mr. Aznoe and his wife operated their family dairy farm on the Barnes Settlement Road for 36 years.

The couple retired from farming in 1990 and then moved to their current home on Barnes Settlement Road. As a retiree, he was employed for many summers at Thousand Island Park and Kring Point State Park as a groundskeeper.

Mr. Aznoe enjoyed singing, guitar and harmonica playing, performing music at local functions with his bluegrass band “The Guys” during the 1990s. The group was the subject of a Watertown Daily Times feature article at that time.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lyle, Redwood; Douglas and Denise, Redwood;, Steven and Jacqueline, Cape Vincent; a daughter, Diane Aznoe of Lake Katrine, NY; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter: Richard (Heather), Molly, Jake and Paige June Aznoe, Redwood, Nancy (Jeffrey), Madison and Baylee Degenfelder, Shippensburg, PA., Julie Kern and twins Ryot and Oliver, Hammond, Paul Aznoe, Redwood, Jennifer (Lee) Clark, Jordan, Jana and Joslyn Hall, Justin and Shane Aznoe, all of Simpsonville, SC and Dylan Patrick Aznoe, Cape Vincent.

Mr. Aznoe was predeceased by his wife, Marion, his sister, Dorothy Hunter Maloy and his parents.

The family extends special thanks to Caregivers, Watertown, and especially to Evelyn Middlemiss for her excellent home care of Mr. Aznoe.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 am at the Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. Burial will follow at Barnes Settlement Cemetery.
