Harold A. Frasher, 89 Formerly of Watertown and Dexter
Harold A. Frasher, age 89, formerly of Watertown and Dexter, passed away at Country Manor Nursing Home, Carthage, on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 11:45 a.m. where he had resided since April, 2011.
Born January 23, 1924 in Dexter, son of Paul and Lucy Madrid Frasher, he attended Dexter High School.
Mr. Frasher, a World War 11 veteran, served with the 4th Marine Division from 1942 to 1945. He fought in the Marshall Islands and on Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in action. His unit received four Presidential Citations, and he received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Frasher was employed by the Dexter Sulphite Paper Company, Brownville Paper Company and Black Clawson; later he became employed by the General Brown Central School District where he retired in 1986.
He married Gertrude Fitzgerald on September 28, 1946 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Dexter.
Mr. Frasher was a member of Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville, Marine Corps League, Watertown, Life member of Smith-Savage Post 583, Dexter, VFW Post 1400 and Disable Veterans, Watertown. He was also a past member of Dexter Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Frasher played baseball and basketball from 1946 to 1956 with the Dexter American Legion Post 583. He also was a volunteer bartender for the American Legion in the past.
His hobbies included watching baseball, basketball and football games on television. He also enjoyed reading current events and discussing politics.
He is survived by a daughter Sandra Belden of Watertown, two sons, Kevin and his wife Wenda of Brownville, Keith and his wife Joanne of Ohio, seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren, a brother Edward Frasher of Rochester and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude who died May 1, 2010, a brother Wallace Frasher and a son-in-law Thomas Belden who died July 22, 2010.
Calling hours will be Tuesday September 3rd from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church, Brownville with Fr. Michael Gaffney officiating. Burial will be with military honors in Dexter Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Marine Corps League % VFW 231 Bellew Ave. Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
