Harvey A. Skeldon, 92, of Black River


Black River - Harvey A. Skeldon, 92, formerly of 153 N. Main St., Black River, passed Thursday morning, Oct. 17 at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage.

The funeral service will be noon on Monday, October 21 at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.  Burial with military honors will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

Calling hours will precede the service on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

He was born on February 21, 1921 in Thornby, Quebec, Canada, the son of Albert Skeldon and Maude Sparling. In 1926 his family moved to Edwards and he attended school there and then in Talcville.

At the age if 17, Harvey enlisted in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Camp) at the Harrisville Camp.

In 1939 he entered the George Hall Trade school located in Ogdensburg to become a machinist.

From there he went to work at Buffalo Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, NY from 1941 to 1943 as a machine operator.

On September 28, 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the European Theater, North Africa, and was in the Battle of Normandy in the spring of 1944. While in the Navy he volunteered for the Scouts and Raiders. The Scouts and Raiders were the forerunners of the Navy Seals and what some would now call them the Suicide Squad.

He was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class on February 17, 1946 and received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and WWII Victory Medal.

In June 1946, he went to work for the Taggart Paper Mill in Herrings, NY.  After five years working there the mill became known as St. Regis Paper Co.

While working in Herrings he met his wife to be, Helen Gates. The couple married on July 5, 1947 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Black River.

The couple lived in Black River for over sixty years.

Harvey began working with the Carthage Machine Shop  in 1951 as a machine operator and worked with them for 35 years until his retirement in 1986.

His wife retired from Mercy Hospital, where she worked for 17 years in the billing department.  She passed September 4, 2006.

He was a charter member of the Gouverneur VFW Post #6338, Veteran of the Year in 2001 and member of the Dexter American Legion in Black River.

Among his survivors are a daughter and son in law, Mary A. and Kevin F. Bauter, Keeseville, NY; a grandson and his wife, Kevin J.  and Jovy Bauter, Korea; a granddaughter and her husband, Anna M. and Nicholas Grubb, Keeseville; three great granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Appie, Shayna R. Grubb and Isabelle M. Bauter;  four sisters, Eleanor Boulier, Grace Fuller, Beatrice  McEathron and his twin sister, Caroline Webb; two brothers, Clarence and Allen Skeldon; several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Celinda and four brothers, Douglas, Lennis, James and Edmond all died before him.
