Helen June Hart, 100, native of Massena
Mrs. Helen June Hart, 100, of Glendale, Arizona, a native of Massena, passed away Wednesday afternoon at the Hospice of Arizona, Del E. Webb Inpatient Unit in Sun City West, Arizona. She had been transferred there from the Golden Generation Adult Care Home, where she had been under their loving and compassionate care for the past six months.
June, as she was affectionately known, was born June 15, 1912 in Massena, New York, the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Jennie A. Quennell Shampine and was a graduate of Massena High School. She first married Warren H. Garris on May 30, 1930 with Rev. Beech, officiating. Together, they had four children. On December 10, 1956, June married Arthur B. Hart at her home with Rev. William Thomas, officiating. Art predeceased her on May 17, 1965.
June worked for a short time at the Massena Observer newspaper before moving out of the area. She than worked in various accounting offices in Alexandria, Virginia before her retirement. June’s greatest passion and pastime was reading and she truly enjoyed going out to dinner, traveling, and when she was younger; she enjoyed dancing. Most recently she enjoyed celebrating her 100th birthday with her children and many of her grand and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Graney of Glendale, Arizona and Thelma Utsman of Bluff City, Tennessee; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
June was predeceased by two children, Philip W. Garris in 1989 and Sharon Fanara in 2012; her sister, Stella Clark; and her brothers, Claude, Gerald, Delbert, Joseph, and Erwin Shampine.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service celebrating June’s life will be held during the summer at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 N. Main Street, Massena, New York.
