Horace C. Schanely, 93, a resident of Ives Hill Retirement Community, Watertown, passed September 8, 2013 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Born on May 8, 1920 in Quakertown, PA, son of Russell B. Schanely and Miriam (Himmelwright) Schanely, he attended Quakertown High School.

Mr. Schanely entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on April 7, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA and served with the 312th Army Air Force in England during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 8, 1945 as a Sergeant, earning the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married Janet Weierbach of Quakertown, PA on November 27, 1948 at the Bethel Evangelical Church in Quakertown, PA with the Rev. W.J. Friday officiating.

Upon returning home from the military he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Horology “Study of Time” and became a watchmaker. He and his wife owned and operated the Schanely Jewelry Store in Downingtown, PA until 1973.

Mr. Schanely worked at Spitz Space Systems from 1974 until 1977, where he assembled electronic components for planetariums used at colleges, local schools and museums.  He also worked at Smith Industries, where he manufactured and assembled aircraft instrumentation from 1978 until he retired in 1985.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and was a member  for over 20 years of the Lions Club in Downingtown, PA, where he served as president during our country’s bicentennial celebration in 1976. An avid sportsman, Mr. Schanely played hockey in his younger years, enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and softball for most of his life, and bowled well into his 80s.

Among his survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Steven C. and Miyako N. Schanely, Black River; a grandson, Michael L. Schanely, Watertown;  a granddaughter and her husband, Teresa L. and Miguel Montoya, Maynard, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Janet W. Schanely; son William J. Schanely; brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Marilyn K. Schanely; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy E. and William J. Somerville, M.D.; and sister Phyllis S. Frantz.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the parlor at Ives Hill Retirement Community, 1200 Jewell Drive, Watertown, NY.  A celebration of life will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the activities room with Rev. Richard McCaughey officiating.

A graveside service with military honors is tentatively set for 11 a.m., Saturday, September 14 at the Union Cemetery in Quakertown, PA.
