Deer River – Jack L. Best, 65, 10431 East Rd, died Monday morning, March 18th, at home, under the care of his family and Hospice of Lewis County.

Born in Watertown on December 29, 1947, he is the son of Lionel & Corleen Fralick. He graduated from Carthage Central High School with the Class of 1967. After high school he served with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1-9), an infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps, where he served faithfully until 1969.  During that time he was stationed in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Purple Heart medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster for being wounded in action, once against enemy forces on February 9, 1968 and again on April 16, 1968 during the Battle of Khe Sanh.

He married Brenda Terry on June 29, 1968.  He was employed for a short time by Carthage Papermakers, before transitioning to the former Crown Zellerbach and James River Paper Mill.  He retired from James River in 1991.  Jack enjoyed reading, walking, watching stock car racing and studying history.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda, at home, his son and his companion, Brian S. Best & Laurie Stoffel of Lowville and his daughter and her companion, Kristi Best & Carlton Spencer of Glenfield.  He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Donna McAdoo, Sodus Center, and his sister, Mary Shawcross, Watertown, as well as his longtime, best friend, Bill Biolsi.  He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Rodney Best.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Samuel P. Lundy, Vicar, Christ the King Anglican Church, Watertown, officiating.  Calling hours will precede the funeral on Saturday from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.
