James A. Molnar, 74, of MassenaMassena – Mr. James A. Molnar, 74, of 182 Highland Road, peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, November 14, 2012 at the Highland Nursing Home. James was born April 16, 1938 in Massena, the son of the late James and Theresa Ardenhazy Molnar. He graduated from Massena High School. On May 10, 1957, he entered the US Air Force, where he honorably served until his discharge on January 10, 1959 as an Airman Third Class. Before going in the Air Force, Jim worked at the Highland Hotel, where he was a reservation clerk and host to the many guests. After his time in the military, he began his career in the airline industry, first starting with Swiss Air in New York City, before going to Garuda – Airline of Indonesia in Los Angeles as an office manager. He truly enjoyed his career as it allowed him to travel around the world. However, in 1984 Jim was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis causing him to have to retire and move back to Massena. After many years of struggling to conquer his illness and never complaining about his illness, he was forced to enter the Highland Nursing Home. While there he garned the support of the wonderful staff and caregivers that became his extended family. Jim truly enjoyed gourmet cooking, listening to opera music, seeing the first snowfall, and watching the New York Yankees. He had truly generous and giving spirit and took great pride and enjoyment in giving to others. James is survived by his loving sister, Irene Szarka of Massena; his nieces and nephews, Joan Szarka-Eddy and her husband, Jamie of Massena, and her children, Blake and Andrew; Eric Szarka of Massena, and his children, Melissa, Todd and Trudy; Andy and Kimberly Szarka of San Antonio; his deceased nephew Jay’s children, Vandy and Tim, Jana, William, and Brian, and his longtime friend, Daniel Ireland of Los Angeles, CA.. He is also survived his wonderful and caring extended family of friends and caregivers at the Highland Nursing Home, as well as the loving staff of volunteers, aides, and nurses of Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. In his generous and giving spirit, James’ final gift was that of science. He donated his body to Upstate Medical University Anatomical Gift Program so that others may learn about his illness and further their education. He will be buried in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley or the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
