James D. Hayes, 75, of MassenaJames D. Hayes, 75, of Kennedy Court passed away on March 12, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on May 28, 1937 in Potsdam, the son of James H. and Marie (Place) Hayes. He proudly served his countryMassena in the U.S. Army following his honorable discharge he married Dorothy Reagan on January 9, 1960 at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dorothy predeceased him in November 1997. On August 18, 2000 he married Mary Hunt Szeles at St. Joseph's Church with Rev. Alan Shnob presiding. Jim was employed at Reynolds Metals retiring in 1993 after 33 years as as a clerk. He was a member of AMVETS Post #4, past member of Madrid Fire Department where he started at the age of 18, and in 2005 he earned a certificate of Appreciation for 50 years of service, and he was also a past member of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department Exempts. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge. Jim was an avid New York Yankee fan and enjoyed attending many of their home games. Jim's survivors include his wife Mary, sons Timothy and Rachelle of Massena, NY; Thomas and Melissa of Williamsville, NY; Todd and Mary Ellen "Cissy" of Massena; Tammie O'Riley of North Syracuse, NY; and Tina and Steve Ashlaw of North Syracuse NY; nine grandchildren, also surviving Jim are his stepchildren, Richard and Chris Szeles of New Hartford, NY; Jacklyn and Matt Nichols of Madrid and Thomas and Meredith Szeles of Columbus, OH., four step grandchildren, two brothers, John and Nan Hayes of Queensbury, NY; and Peter and Laurie Hayes of Madrid, NY; several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Claxton-Hepburn Hospital / Richard E. Winters Cancer Center. Friends and family may call Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 2-4 pm and 7- 9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. Funeral mass will be held on Friday at 10:00 am March 15, 2013 at St. Mary's Church in Massena with Rev. Donald J. Manfred and Rev. C. John McAvoy concelebrating.
