James S. “Jay” Smith, 42, of Madrid

MADRID – Mr. James S. “Jay” Smith, 42, of 3582 County Route 14, tragically passed away Sunday morning, April 29, 2012.

Jay was born April 15, 1970 in Potsdam, the son of Nancy I. White Smith and the late Stanley E. Smith.  He graduated in 1988 from Potsdam High School, where attended BOCES for Construction Trades.  Jay first married Lisa Stiles in 1994 at the Potsdam Methodist Church.  The marriage later ended in divorce.  On May 9, 2003, he married Bobbi J. Villnave in Madrid with Justice Jennifer Appleby, officiating.

Jay was currently working as a QC Rewinder with Potsdam Specialty Papers, Inc.  He had previously worked for Kunoco Fuels.  Jay was a member of the Potsdam and Madrid Volunteer Fire Departments.  He truly enjoyed boating and being on the water in his boat, “Jay’s Dream."  Jay was a Dallas Cowboys football fan and loved to work, whether it was car detailing, construction, or installing pools, he took great pride in his jobs.  He loved spending time at his family’s summer camp on “The Flow” in Parishville.

Jay is survived by his wife, Bobbi, his son, Matt Smith, currently stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California; his step-daughters, Morgan Sharpe and her companion, Brandyn Jerome of Plano, Texas; Brianna Baillargeon of Madrid; his mother and father, Nancy and Wayne Green of Potsdam; and his paternal grandmother, Bertha LaTreille of Potsdam;

He is also survived by his sisters, Lisa and Tony Wagstaff and Wendy and David Rufa, all of Ogdensburg; his brothers, Chad and Catherine Green of Massena; and Wayne D. “Duff” and Jennifer Green of West Potsdam; his half sister, Whitney Smith of North Carolina; his stepsisters, Allison Cass of Baldwinsville and Jolene King of North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Linda Dixson of Madrid, his father-in-law, Gary and Judy Villnave of Waddington; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Stanley Smith in December 2002, his grandparents, Stanley A. Smith, Robert and Winona White, Francis and Dorothy Green, and his father-in-law, Rene Dixson.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 N. Main Street, Massena, Wednesday 3-7 PM.  The members of the Potsdam and West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Departments will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 10:00 AM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Harry K. Snow, celebrating.  Burial with fireman’s honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Norwood.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
