Jean A. MacDonald, 83, of Black River


Jean A. MacDonald, 83, of 196 Maple St., Black River, passed Wednesday, Oct. 16,  at Hospice of Jefferson County Residence at the Ellis farm, Watertown, where she was surrounded by her family.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Saturdayy, October 19 at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, October 20 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

Born July 9, 1930, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of George Mattis and Helen Dyer, she graduated from Greenfield High School in MA. In 1948.

Following school she was a telephone operator. She then married Francis S. MacDonald on March 27, 1950 in Putney, VT.  Mr. MacDonald was serving in the US Army and the couple resided through out the United States and overseas during his military career.  During this time she was a homemaker and raised her children.

In 1973, she became a volunteer for the Army Community Service at Fort Greely, Alaska and later at Fort Drum, NY, up until 1982. She then became the catering manager at the Officer’s Club on Fort Drum, retiring in 1995.

Mrs. MacDonald was one of the original “Ladies of the Mountain" 10th Mountain Division, an auxiliary member at the Watertown VFW and Black River American Legion.

Two of her greatest joys and pastimes were reading and crossword puzzles.

Among her survivors are her loving husband of 63 years, CSM (Ret) Francis S. MacDonald of Black River; a son and daughter in law, Patrick M. and Linda MacDonald, Issaqueh, WA; three daughters and their husbands, Teresa L. and Pat Dumoulin, Kokomo, IN, Arlene F. and Michael Bocchino, Carlisle, PA, Mary E. and Justin Baker, Columbia, SC; a sister, Janet Dresser, FL; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A son, Dennis MacDonald, passed in 2012 and a daughter, Susan MacDonald, passed in 1953.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Hospice of Jefferson County.
