Kathleen Wood Johnston, 91, of Watertown

Kathleen Wood Johnston, 91, of Barben Ave., died Monday July 9, at Samaritan Medical Center. 

Kathleen was born on March 31, 1921, in Fulton, NY, the daughter of Wilson and Gertrude Worden Nichols.  She graduated from local schools and received her Master’s Degree in Music from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.  She was a music teacher in several northern New York school districts for a number of years. 

Kathleen also was the church organist for a number of North Country churches, and she taught private music lessons from age 16 throughout her entire life. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and participated in a number of church and music related organizations.
 
She married the Rev. Allison C. Wood, June 6, 1943, at State Street Methodist Church in Fulton, NY.  Rev. Wood, a well known United Methodist Minister and District Superintendent, died January 31, 1991.  She later married C. Jay Johnston, October 24, 1992, at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bruce Chapman, officiating.

She is survived by two sons and their spouses - David Wood (Anne Marchetta) of Boston, Mass. and Douglas Wood (Mary Jo) of Watertown, two daughters and their spouses - Sharon Wood (Loretta Wrobel) of Ashford, Conn. and Dawn W. Powers (Patrick) of Watertown, and Jay’s children - Jeanne Johnston of Indiana and Jay Johnston, Jr., of New Jersey; also, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In celebration of her life, a service will be held Friday, July 13, 2012 at 11:00 am at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Leon VanWie officiating. A reception will follow in the church rotunda. Burial will be in Fulton at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.

Donations may be made in Kathleen’s name to a music related organization of your choice.
