Malcolm Wesley “Mac” Bates, 88, of Canton


Malcolm Wesley “Mac” Bates, 88, formerly of 1168 State Hwy 68, died Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Maplewood Campus, Canton while surrounded by his loving family.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 12th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. The burial in Clayton Cemetery will be held privately. A memorial service ( to be announced ) will be held in the Clayton area in the spring.

A memorial mass will be held Thursday at Grace Episcopal Church, 9 E. Main Street, Canton at 12 noon with Rev. Mother Evette Austin officiating.

“Mac” was born September 7, 1925, in Glen Park, NY, a son of the late Malcolm E. and Edna E. (Babcock) Bates. He graduated Cape Vincent High in 1942. After high school, he attended Cornell University for dairy herd improvement and testing. He traveled to 25 different farms to help manage the improvement of dairy cattle.

In 1946 he enlisted in the US Army Air Force and was stationed in Japan with the occupation forces after WWII.

After an honorable discharge in 1947, “Mac” returned to the Clayton area working on the home farm before going to work for Good Chevrolet and Olds.  He later worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway and moved to Canton, NY on Memorial Day Weekend in 1957. He then worked for Art Robinson Farm & Equipment from Jan 1958 to Nov 1982.  “Mac” retired from St. Lawrence University as Shop Manager and Mechanic.

On July 28, 1951 he married his beloved wife, Lois Elnina Whitmore in the Canton United Methodist Church. Lois died October 24, 2011 after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Surviving are five sons, Kevin (Carrie) Bates of Canton, Martin “Marty” (Janie Stein) Bates of College Station, TX, Craig Bates of Melbourne, Australia, Christopher (Teri) Bates of Malone and Andrew Bates of Rochester; three daughters, Michele (Randy) Hamilton of Carthage, Lisa (Thomas) Mullie of Herkimer and Sara (John) Bootz of Newburgh; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Millard of DePue, NY and Alta Bates of Cape Vincent; two brothers, Kenneth G. and wife Judy of Dexter and Robert J. and wife Mary Lou of Chaumont and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Christine Mason and brothers, Donald and Frederick.

“Mac” was a vesting member and communicant of Grace Episcopal Church, Canton, where he served as Senior and Junior Warden, as well as being Chairman of the committee to refurbish the church interior in 1993-94. He was a member of the St. Lawrence Grange, where he served as Grand Master in New York state at the age of 16.

In March 1948, “Mac” joined the Free & Accepted Masons in Cape Vincent and later joined the Chaumont Lodge 171. He was also a member of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum and an Honorary Chairman of the Alzheimer’s Assoc. Memory Walk Committee.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Grace Episcopal Church Building Fund, Alzheimer’s Support Group at Maplewood Campus or to the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund.
