Marcia S. Treadwell, 96, of Watertown

Marcia S. Treadwell, 96, Watertown, NY, passed away June 16, 2014, at the Samaritan Medical Center with her family at her side.

She was the widow of John H. Treadwell who died February 17, 1999.

She was born in Dolgeville, NY, January 7, 1918, daughter of the late Albert B. Stone and Rowena Kingsbury Stone.

She attended schools in Mexico and Utica, NY, and graduated from Carthage High School in 1935.  In her senior year, she received the Dorothy Ebersol Reed Prize, presented by the Northern New York Federation of Women’s Club for an essay entitled “The Influence of Immigration on American Art.”  She graduated from The Weylister Secretarial Junior College, Milford, CT, in 1937.

She was employed as a secretary to the Agency Director of New York Life Insurance Co. in Watertown, NY.  Subsequently, she became Assistant to the late Alice E. Mount, Advertising Director, Empsall’s Department Store, Watertown.

She married John H. Treadwell of Watertown, NY, on August 23, 1941, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, Utica, NY.

Marcia was actively involved in many community organizations.  She was a member of the House of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, Twig leader, member of the House of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary Board of Directors, and Assistant Treasurer of the House of the Good Samaritan Gift Box.  As a member of First Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School, was Treasurer of the United Presbyterian Women, was a Deacon, a member of the church choir and organist for the Sunday School and Youth Group programs.  She also taught at Faith Chapel’s Week Day School of Religion.  She served on the Boards of Directors of the Visiting Nurse Association, YWCA, Jefferson County Children’s Home and Girl Scouts.  She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader and led the area’s Girl Scout Cookie Drive.  She also was a Cub Scout Den Mother.  As a member of the American Red Cross, she led nurse recruitment for blood clinics, and during World War II was a Staff Assistant.  She was a Division Leader for the United Fund and March of Dimes.

Marcia was a Life Member of the Henderson Harbor Yacht Club, serving as a member of the Board of Directors, Treasurer and chairperson of the Swimming Program.  She actively supported the Yacht Club Auxiliary and was an enthusiastic Lightning Class sailor and member of Henderson Harbor Fleet 225.

She was a Life Member of Little Theatre of Watertown, playing female leads in “Never Too Late”, “The Subject Was Roses” and “Ah, Wilderness”.  She was also a cast member in “Forty Carats”, and participated in plays for mental health organizations.

Marcia was a Teacher’s Assistant at Case Junior High School Library for 17 years, retiring in 1985.

In recent years, she was a member and honorary Queen Mum of the Cardinal Sinners chapter of the Red Hat Society.

She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, needlework, solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles, baking and cooking, and summers at the cottage, Hendershore.

Marcia thoroughly enjoyed people and had a wonderful sense of humor.  With her devilish giggle, and famous “yoo-hoo”, she could enter a room full of strangers and, within minutes, win their hearts, leaving them smiling with a happy memory.  She could restore people’s faith in the human race.

During 1960-1961, the Treadwell family hosted an American Field Service student, Edith Tuchschmidt from St. Gallen, Switzerland, and have continued a close family relationship with Edith and her husband, Bruno Spaeti, MD, and their three children.

The family wishes to acknowledge the  love and care provided by Marcia’s caregivers, Charline Johnson, Hilde Espinoza and Cathy Cahill.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan Treadwell Woods; a son, John H. Treadwell II (Sara), both of Henderson Harbor, NY; grandchildren Jefferson, John (Michelle), and Huntington (Katie); a great grandson, Cameron; a sister-in-law, Wilfreda B. Stone; a niece and six nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Irwin K. Stone, MD, and Frederic A. Stone, MD.

Marcia was known for her wit, and, in particular, her frequent comment to friends:  “Remember….if you can’t laugh, you’re sunk”.

A celebration of Marcia’s life will be held at the family cottage, Hendershore, Henderson Harbor, on a date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Walker Cancer Treatment Center, c/o Samaritan Medical Center Foundation of NNY, 830 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601;  or Peters-Stevens Boat Annex, PO Box 322, Henderson, NY 13650.
