Margaret A. “Margi” Sowle, 70,  died on December 27, 2013 at Maplewood Campus in Canton following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born on July 1, 1943 in Washington, D.C., and was raised in San Francisco, CA. She was a Vietnam War-era veteran of the US Army. She later became a flight attendant for Flying Tigers charter flights and traveled throughout Asia and Europe.

She was one of the first woman street artists in Montreal, Canada, in the late 1960s, where she worked as a silver and goldsmith. She returned to San Francisco in the early 1970s and her oil paintings, drawings, sculptures, stained glass and jewelry were featured in many juried art exhibits throughout California and Oregon,

In 1980 she moved to Long Island where she opened a stained glass studio and also exhibited her fine art in juried exhibits on Long Island and NYC. She moved to the North Country in 1987 and pursued a formal degree in art. She was a 1993 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, where she majored in art.

Ms. Sowle moved to the state of Washington in 1994 where she worked as a VISTA volunteer teaching art to children. She also continued to exhibit her fine art in Washington, Nevada and California.

She returned to the north country in 2005 to live near close friends following her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. She loved jazz and was a practicing Buddhist. Ms. Sowle also was a proud member of NNY Prism. She is survived by loving friends Joan Howlett and Beaulieu of Norwood, Gary Berk of DeKalb and Carole Crowe of Vero Beach, FL.

Donations in her name can be made to NNY Prism, the Society of United Helpers, the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Memorial service arrangements are incomplete and will be held announced at a later date.
