Antwerp - WWII veteran, Martin James "Jim" Gleeson, 90, passed away June 3rd, 2014 at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, after a brief illness.
The last surviving child of John M. and Florence Render Gleeson, he was born October 9th, 1923 in the town of Philadelphia, NY.
He was employed as a roofer as a young man. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Army on January 21, 1943.He served in the battles and campaign of Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland, and fought in the invasion of Normandy during WWII, arriving by boat to the beaches of Normandy, June 7th, 1944. His entire tour of duty was overseas service. He was honorable discharged from Battery A, 763rd Field Artillery BN on November 19, 1945. He was awarded the European African Middle-Eastern, Good Conduct, and WWII Victory medals.
Jim married Margaret "Peg" Haymond on June 5, 1948.
In 1954, he and his wife Peg purchased the Antwerp Hotel and Bar on Main St in Antwerp, NY. He was also employed by Antwerp Roofing and Flooring until he became employed with the former St. Regis Paper Mill, Deferiet. He retired from Champion International after decades of service on November 1st, 1985.
He was a member and Past Commander of the Antwerp American Legion Post 916 in Antwerp, NY and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gouvernuer, NY.
He is predeceased by his wife Margaret "Peggy",a stepson Timothy J. Allen, sisters Hannah Gleeson, Julia Booth, and Mary Ross, and brothers, Wilson, John, and Patrick Gleeson. His longtime companion Evelyn Alguire also predeceased him.
Jim is survived a son, Martin Gleeson Jr., Heuvelton, NY and three daughters, Cheryl Gleeson, Antwerp, Daryl Persons, Boonville,NY, and Eileen Daniels, Sackets Harbor, NY. He had 10 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren, a brother-in-law Ronald Haymond, Antwerp, a sister-in-law Carol Gleeson of Dexter, several nieces and nephews, and a beloved Kitty named "Ameretto".
In later years, he enjoyed gardening, family gatherings, and his past custodial work after retirement at the Antwerp American Legion.
A graveside service with military honors will take place Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Antwerp at 11:00 AM. Following the service, friends and family will gather for a reception at the Antwerp American Legion immediately following. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
