Martin Konkol, 92, of Turin

LOWVILLE- Martin Konkol, 92, formerly of Houseville Road, Turin, died Friday morning, April 27, 2012 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, where he has resided since February, 2008.

Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired Methodist minister, officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be in Old Glendale Cemetery.  There are no calling hours.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; four children, Kathryn and Graham Masters of Lincoln, CA,  Susan Konkol of Carson City, NV, Donald Konkol of Glenfield, John Konkol of Alexandria Bay; Two step-daughters, Kathy and Ricardo Alfaro of Florida, Susan and Michael Lively of Chaumont; a sister, Mary Konkol of Lowville; three grandchildren, Nathan Konkol, Annesha and Sarah Masters; seven step-grandchildren . 

He is predeceased by four brothers and a sister, Joseph Konkol, who died on December 25, 2002, Stanley Konkol who died on May 7, 2004; Walter, Bennie, and Sophie Konkol, who died in infancy.

Martin was born at home in Turin, NY on November 11, 1919, a son of the late John and Frances Sulich Konkol.  He attended country school at Bardo’s Corners in Houseville and General Martin School in Glenfield.  Martin served in the Civilian Conservation Corps before WWII. 

He enlisted in the Army in November of 1940.  He was in France, Belgium and Germany, as well as Scotland, Africa and Tunisian campaigns.   Martin's rank was Private First Class and he was with Co. F. 1st Division 18th Infantry.  He received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement against the enemy.  Martin was overseas for three years and in addition to the Bronze Star he is entitled to wear the Pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon and received the Good Conduct European Theater with eight battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Clusters and the American Defense Ribbon.  

After the war, he worked on the family farm and at Dadville Tree Nursery and Snow Ridge. He married Dorthy Emerson, she died on November 28, 1992.   He worked for Georgia Pacific, Lyons Falls,  for 25 years, retiring in 1981. 

On Jun 25, 1994, he married Barbara L. Male at the Chaumont Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912  VFW, he served as Commander of the Turin VFW; was a member of BPOE #1605, Lowville Lodge, was a past member of Lowville American Legion # 162, member of singing waters Senior Citizens Club; member of the Polish-American Club, Glenfield; a member of Pitch Card Club in Constableville. 

He enjoyed woodworking, the outdoors and hiking.
