Mary Jane White, 82, of St. RegisAkwesasne - Ms. Mary Jane White, 82, of Sweet Grass Manor, St. Regis, peacefully passed away at her home on Tuesday afternoon, November 27, 2012, with the love and support of her family and Akwesasne Home Support at her side. Mary Jane was born July 7, 1930 in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Joseph White and Mary Oakes. She attended schools in Syracuse. She started working at age 15 in different retail stores in Syracuse before moving to Brooklyn, where she went to work for Phizer Medical Research Labs. In 1975 she moved back to the reservation where she became one of the first home health aides at the Home for the Aged. She later worked for several years as a sales clerk at Tickets General Store in St. Regis until her retirement.
She was a Bear clan and was active in the St. Regis Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary Jane truly enjoyed traveling, shopping, listening to music going to the Bingo Palace, and buying and caring for others.
Mary Jane was the matriarch and overseer of her family; making sure that everyone remained close. She will be sadly missed by her sister, Verlain E. White and her husband Edward Hogan of Syracuse. In addition, she will be dearly missed by the many nieces and nephews that she was instrumental in raising including, Ricky Joseph White and his family, Sheena, Mark, and Chloe; Naomi Martin, Mary and Ron Lazore, Bridgette and Brian Lazore, Melody L. Point, Victoria and Mike Truax, Joseph White Jr., Marion and Edward Hogan, and Eagle Cook White. She was an integral part of their lives as their “Earth Angel.”
She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph “Sonny” White in 1983.
Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 AM with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating.
Mary Jane’s family would like to extend a deep thank you to the staff and friends with the Akwesasne Home Support and the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group for the care and support given to her during her illness.
