Merle C. Farrell, 87, of County Rte. 1, Redwood, died Monday morning at Samaritan Medical Center after a brief illness.

Merle was born on August 27, 1925, in Theresa, NY, the son of Earl and Pearl M. Running Farrell.

He was educated in Theresa Schools and then served in the U.S. Third Army, 9th Division in Central Europe, from October 1944 until November 1946. He was assigned to Military Police Unit 677.

He married Doris Gionet on October 7, 1950 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Alexandria Bay, NY with Father Armond Dausalt officiating. 

Merle was a union bricklayer and stone mason who worked throughout the north country.  He was a lifetime member of the Alexandria Bay American Legion and the Watertown VFW Post 1400.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed woodworking in his retirement.

Merle is survived by his wife, Doris; his two daughters, Patricia Farrell, LaFargeville, and Mrs. Tom (Marsha) Martello, Doylestown, PA; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Neil (Betty) Wilson, Theresa, NY.

He is predeceased by a brother, Elwood, and five sisters, Hilda Thomas, Helen LaRue, Dorothy Debar, Hazel, and Arlaween.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 26 from 7-9 pm at the Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 27 at 11:00 am at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church with Fr. Douglas Comstock officiating. Burial will follow at Barnes Settlement Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Merle’s name to the Alexandria Bay or Redwood Ambulance Fund.
