Merton W. "Mike" Hodge, 88, of ClaytonMerton W. "Mike" Hodge, 88, Rees St., Clayton, passed away Sunday morning, May 20, 2012, at his home. The funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Clayton, on Thursday, May 24, at 11AM with Rev. Jerome Wichelns officiating with burial at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours and arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton. Mr. Hodge was born in Plainfield, NJ on July 27, 1923, son of Clarence and Florence Carpenter Hodge. He graduated from Watertown High School and had attended St. Lawrence University Extension. On November 21, 1942 he married Madaline Dodge at Trinity Episcopal Church. He entered the US Navy on August 14, 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater and China, receiving the Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, Victory, and American Theater Medals. On January 26, 1946 he was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class. After his service in the Navy, the couple moved to Clayton and then to California for five years. In 1953 they moved to Utica and then to N. Carolina where he worked as a tool operator and general foreman for Singer in Black Mountain. They moved to Syracuse where he retired in 1985 as a process and manufacturing engineer for Rollway Bearing, Liverpool. While working for them, he had assignments in Germany and Romania. Since 1989 the couple had wintered in Leesburg, FL. Mr. Hodge was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 821, and Oriental Faxton Mason Lodge 224. He was active with Habitat for Humanity and a tennis player. Besides his wife, Madaline D., he is survived by his daughter, Nancy H. Brame, Clay; two grandsons and their wives, Matthew and Cheryl Brame and Michael and Vicky Brame; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite Storey, FL and Florence Fetterman, Watertown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations in his name to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601. |
