Michael “Mick” Lawler, 55, of Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR—The Funeral Mass for Michael “Mick” Lawler, 55, will be held Saturday July 21, at 11:00 at St. James Catholic Church, East Main St., Gouverneur, with Rev. Stephen Rocker, Pastor, officiating.  There will be a reception following on Saturday July 21, at Gentry’s Restaurant, Gouverneur. 

Calling hours will be Friday July 20, from 12:00 noon until 8:00pm at the family home at 39 Gleason Street, Gouverneur. Friends are asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Canton Golden Bear Booster Club, 99 State Street, Canton, 13617; St. James School Fund, 20 South Gordon Street, Gouverneur, 13642, or to the Gouverneur Public Library, 60 Church Street, Gouverneur, 13642.

Surviving are his wife Gale E.; one son, Eric, Deer Park, and his fiancée, Kristen Sorbera, White Plains; one daughter, Amie, Philadelphia, PA; his mother-in-law, Carolyn Lothridge, Chittenango; five (5) brothers and four (4) sisters-in-law: James and Deborah, Columbia, SC; John and Karen, Vancouver, WA; Timothy and Elizabeth, East Syracuse; Kevin and Cheryl, Dallas, TX; and David, East Syracuse; and two (2) sisters and two (2) brothers-in-law:; Kathleen and John Williams, Lincoln, NE; Maureen and Joseph Piel, Glenville; and several nieces and nephews.

Born April 16, 1957 in Syracuse, he was the son of James Francis and Anna Kudlacik Lawler.

On October 18, 1980, he married Gale Elizabeth Lothridge at St. Mary’s Church in Minoa.
He graduated from East Syracuse-Minoa High School in 1975, where he played football and lacrosse, and earned a BS degree from Columbia University in 1979. While attending Columbia he was a defensive lineman on the football team, he played in the first college football game played in the New York Giants Meadowland Stadium.

Mr. Lawler earned two Masters Degrees, the first from Columbia in Mining Engineering in 1980 and the second in Business Administration from Clarkson University in 1985.

In 1981, the couple moved to Gouverneur, where Mr. Lawler was the Assistant Mine Superintendent of the St. Joe Minerals zinc mine in Balmat, where he eventually became President and CEO.  The mine is currently owned by St. Lawrence Zinc, a subsidiary of Hudbay Minerals.  

Mr. Lawler was active in the community of Gouverneur.  He was Past President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Edward John Noble Hospital and Kinney Nursing Home, and past president of the Gouverneur Lions Club. He was also Past President of the Adirondack Chapter of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and a past board member of CITEC Manufacturing and Technology Solutions at Clarkson University. He traveled all over the world on business and was often asked to speak at conferences and meetings related to the mining industry.

He enjoyed watching his son Eric play hockey and was a New York Giants football fan and an ADK 46-R.  His favorite pastime was home remodeling and repairs.
