Michael P. Mitchell (Mitch), 64, of Ogdensburg


Funeral services for Michael P. Mitchell (Mitch), age 64, of 317 Hamilton Street, will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Frary Funeral Home on 515 Caroline Street at 3:00PM.

Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours will be held the same day as the funeral service from 1:00PM until the time of the funeral.

Mr. Mitchell passed away on Sunday morning, July 20, 2014, at his home with his loving wife and family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Michael is survived by his wife, Cindy; his daughter, Shawna L. Brenno; three grandchildren, Ashleigh E. Carter, Mitchell J. Brenno and Collin J. Brenno; whom he dearly loved, a sister, Mallory A. Mitchell; a dear sister-in-law, Linda A. (Dan) Wells; a dear brother-in-law, Judson D. (Linda) Ashley; along with many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold J. Mitchell Jr. and Beverly Rabetoy Mitchell.

Michael was born on July 6, 1950 in Ogdensburg, NY the son of Harold J. Mitchell Jr. and Beverly Rabetoy Mitchell. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1969 and completed a one year course at Canton ATC. On September 5, 1970 he married Cindy L. Ashley at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg.

On August 25, 1971, he joined the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and was appointed deputy by Sheriff Ceylon Allen and assigned to the road patrol. Mike moved up the ranks at the Sheriff’s Department and in March of 1980 he was appointed to the rank of Sergeant by Sheriff Keith Knowlton where he served as road supervisor for the evening shift.

On April 17, 1986, he was appointed Warden of the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility by Sheriff Keith Knowlton where he served until his retirement on March 30, 2007. During his career with the Sheriff’s Department, he attended and completed many training seminars, particularly the University of Michigan, I.D.S. School; advanced police officers, tactical training, hostage negotiations, violent death investigations and numerous other schools.

He was also nominated to go to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Training School. Mike received the Silver Star Award from the Federal Award Committee. Mike was very dedicated to his service with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

Mike loved the St. Lawrence River, boating, fishing and hunting. He was an avid sports fan, especially the NY Yankees and NY Giants. He enjoyed his home and working around his home. He especially enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren and attending all of their social and sporting events.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis Youth organizations or any youth organization of one’s choice, the Richard E. Winters Cancer Center, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or a charity of one’s choice.
