Ernest James “Mickey” Hunkins, 74, formerly of West Carthage and more recently, 42 Church St., Cortland, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Crown Center Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Cortland.

He was born on October 26, 1938 at Miss Garvin’s West Carthage Hospital, the son of Russell G. & Frances V. LaChausse Hunkins. He was known as Mickey from when he was a small boy to this day, although it was recently realized, his coworkers knew him as “Ernie."  He grew up on the family farm on the Martin Street Road and at age 6, he tragically lost his left leg. He seemed to grow up as most young boys do and he graduated with the West Carthage High School Class of 1958.

He worked on the family farm until 1965 when he moved to Cortland. There he was employed as an assembler for Smith-Corona Typewriter Co. in Dryden for 27 years, until the company shut down. He then went to work for XCP Co., Groton, NY. He retired, but continued to live in Cortland until his death.

He is survived by two brothers,Russell J. Hunkins, Pennellville and Robert A. & his wife Sandy Hunkins of Eagle Bay and Cooperstown. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mickey is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Donald E. Hunkins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Roger Best, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, West Carthage.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
